What self-containment means

A self-contained vehicle can be occupied for a minimum of three days without needing to connect to external services or discharge waste. This is required under New Zealand law to legally freedom camp in areas designated for self-contained vehicles.

  • Fresh water storage — minimum 4 litres per person per day for 3 days
  • Toilet — fixed toilet with sealed waste tank (no composting)
  • Grey water containment — all waste water held on board
  • Waste storage — rubbish can be contained for 3 days
  • Signage — self-containment certificate displayed on the vehicle

What we inspect

Water Capacity
Fresh water tank volume measured and verified against the minimum requirement for your vehicle's stated occupancy.
Toilet & Waste Tank
Fixed toilet with a sealed cassette or black water tank. We confirm the system is functional and correctly plumbed.
Grey Water System
All grey water (sink, shower) must be captured on board. We check all drains route to a dedicated grey water tank.
Certification & Sticker
On passing, we issue the official self-containment certificate and supply the compliance sticker for your vehicle.
